The Scent of Space

Astronauts report the lingering smell of burnt steak on re-entry after a space-walk. Which got me wondering, does all space smell the same? Is the whole universe like a badly supervised barbecue? Or is our solar system particularly pongy?

After a bit of reading, I learnt that the smell is down to aromatic hydrocarbons, which can create aromas such as scorched tires, eggy sulphur and sugary-sweet. Not necessarily anything you’d want to find bottled in your Christmas stocking then.

One galaxy has been reported to taste like raspberries and smell like rum.

What would a creature have to be like to appreciate these sensations? How would it influence their behaviour?
